Tebis: CAM process structuring at Andreas Weise GmbH

Consistent standardization and automation of manufacturing processes enable model, mold and die manufacturers to process their orders more quickly, with fewer errors and significantly less effort. Andreas Weise GmbH in Iserlohn has come to rely on these benefits, so they ordered Tebis, headquartered in Martinsried near Munich, to provide CAM process structuring. Tebis, the software and process provider for die and mold manufacturing, focused on achieving maximum utilization of the company's programming and machine capacities.

Andreas Weise GmbH accompanies its customers in the first steps from conceptualization, design and manufacturing to series start. For example, the model and mold manufacturer produces prototypes, jigs and fixtures or acts as a contract manufacturer to produce precision parts on 5-axis machining centers. The company places special emphasis on reliability, quality and on-time delivery.

Its employees have been designing on Tebis workstations for years using the "Mold and Die Premium" package. Until just recently, programming was still shop-oriented. The Tebis CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) workstations were located by the machines. Tebis recognized the inefficiency of this approach. For example, changes in the NC program can result in machine downtime, because the machine operator also works with the Tebis system. This increases throughput times – and that can be expensive. A solution was determined in update training with Tebis consultants: The consultants realized a significant potential for improvement by restructuring the manufacturing processes.

The Tebis advisors on site in Iserlohn analyzed the company's processes and derived templates and patterns from them. Their objective was to make the most efficient use of existing programming and machining capacities as well as the available tool inventory. The implementation specialists then optimized the Tebis process libraries and designed templates for 3-axis and 2.5D drilling and milling, using typical customer components. The machining sequence was then defined for the appropriate machines with the best possible tools for the materials. These examples were used to train personnel to prepare these templates themselves. Now programming is no longer performed at the machines, but rather centrally in a dedicated office.

With the support of Tebis, the model and mold manufacturer was able to increase its level of automation and structure the manufacturing processes more efficiently. The company makes better use of its machines and has now become significantly more productive. Andreas Weise was able to optimize interfaces, standardize its processes and implemented paperless manufacturing. Attended machining times and documentation effort were also reduced, and multiple setup was integrated. "The expense was well worth it," explains managing director Andreas Weise. "Our CAM programmers can now focus entirely on their work. They are working much faster than before thanks to increased automation."
