Preparing CAD models for manufacturing

Design functions specifically developed for the NC programmer


The NC programming of a complex part is based on the 3D CAD model file in which the designer has incorporated all the geometric details of the part.  However, the CAD file is often missing the additional geometry needed for NC programming, such as area and center curves, cover surfaces over recesses, extension and rounding surfaces, coordinate systems, planar surfaces and the geometric form of the blank. Tebis CAD/CAM packages offer easy-to-use CAD functions for this purpose with extensive analysis functions: for example, for detecting design modifications, finding and marking radii and planar surfaces and detecting undercut areas. Functions for determining dimensions and for inserting texts are included in the standard scope of all CAD-capable Tebis software packages.

The better a CAD model is prepared for NC manufacturing, the less effort needs to be invested in NC programming; in many cases, the NC programming can proceed automatically in Tebis, provided that process libraries have first been set up for NC features, NC templates, NC machines and tools.

  • Detect surfaces with quality features that have not been complied with, including gaps, high segmentation and overlapping surfaces
  • Curvatures for evaluating surface quality

Prepare parts for manufacturing

The NC programmer prepares the design of the parts for manufacturing with Tebis:

  • He divides and reduces parts and assemblies to the elements relevant for manufacturing
  • He places fill surfaces over holes and any complex cavities
  • He generates the blank geometry with which milling will begin at the click of a button
  • He extends surfaces to protect part edges and to prevent the cutter from plunging outside the part
  • He derives center curves for machining deep slots from the part geometry 
  • He scans his part for bores and fits and Tebis automatically inserts machining features with which the NC programming will proceed.
  • He does the same for any complex planar surfaces and pockets

Inserting fill surfaces

Fill surfaces are often used before the calculation of NC programs, for example, in the area of recesses and slots. The part will be simplified and decomposed
for a better overview. Tebis also offers convenient functions for this purpose.

Inserting machining features

If parts contain NC features from the Tebis feature library, then subsequent 2.5D NC programming can be performed automatically.

Design blanks

Tebis offers several automatic design functions for defining blanks:

  • With a part envelope
  • With a casting allowance
  • As a layered blank
  • As a 6-sided blank

Extend surfaces

The NC programmer creates extended surfaces to protect sensitive edges in the part during machining.

Surfaces are extended by simply moving the drag arrow.


Creating guide curves

Special high-end milling functions like machining deep slots require guide curves that the NC program creates with the help of a wizard.
