At the starting gates: Tebis V4.0 Release 4


At the Moulding Expo, Tebis will present Release 4, the latest update of Tebis Version 4.0. Release 4 includes many additional features, along with improvements in design and manufacturing to simplify the work process. Tebis is also expanding its application areas with new options for machining with robots, as well as support for laser hardening and laser weld cladding.

This latest Tebis release provides more than 60 new features. Here's a preview of some key improvements:


Release 4 features substantial upgrades, particularly in the area of design. Users will now be able to better recognize and delimit modified areas. During part comparison, Tebis creates corresponding area curves that can be can be used to quickly initiate design measures or to calculate new NC programs for modified areas.

 A new function also makes the work process significantly easier: It creates overlap-free shifted surfaces at defined angles from any curves. All overlaps that would occur within parts, especially at sharp edges and small radii of curvature, are automatically filtered out and smoothed. These surfaces are ideal for separating part surfaces in mold manufacturing, as well as for separating trim steel and trim line surfaces in draw die manufacturing.

Release 4 also brings practical improvements to surface morphing. For example, users can now automatically morph parts together with highly complex trimming curves. The geometry of the original curves is fully retained and color properties are transferred 1:1.


The improvements in Release 4 are not limited to the design side of the equation. For example, to better support users in the CAM area, Release 4 improves the orientation of deep-hole drilling to support automated calculation and machining. A new machining function expertly manages the special requirements of deep-hole drilling, such as threading, intersections of bores and acceleration ramps. This even further simplifies automated deep-hole drilling based on drilling information stored in the part.

User-friendliness is also improved in Release 4. Toolpaths are now easier to define in 5-axis milling. Barrel-cutter use has also been optimized: The tool contact point can now be better controlled in line with the respective part situation. For these tools, which are especially well-suited to machining cavities, it is often best to start with a tool contact point that is closer to the cutter tip, and with a slightly greater slope. The slope can then be reduced to optimize tool wear. At the bottom of the pocket, the slope can be increased until the cutter tip (ball) contacts precisely the fillet between the flank and the bottom. This removes the residual stock at the end of the flank.

Robots and new technologies

Release 4 provides advanced capabilities for machining with robots: Additional axes in robot cells can now also be controlled as simultaneous NC axes – for example, if the robot is mounted on a positioning unit. In such situations, the robot can be permanently positioned with the linear axes oriented to ensure that the arm is used within the optimal working area. With the new part-driven robotic machining, the robot can guide a workpiece past a tool that is in a fixed position in the robot cell.

Thanks to its new support for laser hardening and laser weld cladding, Tebis can now be used in an even larger range of applications. Use of these technologies in die and mold manufacturing is on the rise. Therefore, the ability to combine these technologies with milling and other shaping methods is a major advantage – especially when offered in a single, comprehensive programming environment.
