Tebis is expanding its CAD/CAM system with parametric associative surface- and solid design


Presentations at the Tebis Open House on June 29–30 in Martinsried, Germany, included this advanced design technology. Starting with Version 4.1, parametric associative design can be used for both surfaces and solids in Tebis.

Parametric associative design technology forms the basis for many Tebis CAD/CAM applications. Examples include electrode design, manufacturing-related design of models, gauges and fixtures, geometric analyses, and overall manufacturing preparation. The Job Manager, templates and process libraries are also greatly enhanced by the possibilities of this new technology. When working parametrically, the entire part is automatically updated when changes are made. This makes the technology ideally suited to variants and subsequent adjustments. Overall data preparation is faster, simpler and more flexible.

If machines were to decide, they'd choose NC programs from Tebis! The Tebis "heart" for this year's Open House was designed completely parametrically and then manufactured.

Specifically tailored for manufacturing-oriented companies

Tebis’ parametric design technology is exactly tailored to meet the requirements of manufacturing-oriented companies. Wire-frame models as well as surfaces and solids can be parametrically designed using mostly familiar design and editor functions. In contrast with many other volume-based systems, Tebis does not distinguish between surfaces and solids. This makes the software very easy to use. A further advantage is that all design steps are automatically saved. Thus, for example, a part can be sent for roughing at an early stage without holes or pockets.

Emphasis on user-friendliness

The elements can be edited parametrically either on the graphic 3D object or via the structure tree. All information on the history of a specific geometry element can be directly called up and modified. For complex parts, it’s best to work in an object-oriented manner in the tree with a clearly implemented structure so that the entire process remains clear and easily understood. The Tebis Job Manager is also integrated in the object tree.

Broad range of applications

Tebis specialists presented the versatility of the new technology very clearly at the Open House. For example, working parametrically was shown not only on the Tebis "heart" that was designed and manufactured specifically for the event. Practical examples also included typical parts such as test gauges, core boxes from casting model manufacturing, gripping jaws for part manufacturing, active surfaces for draw die manufacturing, and classic mold frames.

Working parametrically also applies to solids. The Z height of this test gauge was modified after completion of the design. The entire model was automatically updated.

"Based on surveys, we know that nearly 95% of Tebis users access our design functions for manufacturing preparation," says Stephan Galozy, product manager at Tebis AG. "The fact that we have closed an important gap with parametric surface- and solid technology was confirmed by our Open House visitors, who were simply thrilled. We repeatedly heard statements such as 'Now I can do everything in the same environment and don't have to train my employees on two systems.'"

Tebis is planning to test the application in practice with beta customers in the fourth quarter of 2017. Even after delivery of Version 4.1, Tebis users can look forward to further developments in this area; the stated goal of the CAD/CAM experts from Martinsried, Germany, is to successively develop parametric processing in subsequent releases. Keywords here are the integration of parametric processing in existing CAM functions as well as in electrode- and active surface design.
