Where roughing is primarily about achieving a high material removal rate and maximum tool life, finishing is all about the details – emphasis is on surface quality and dimensional accuracy.
But you can still save a tremendous amount of time in this final machining step. For example, finishing with modern circle-segment cutters instead of conventional machining with ball cutters can yield time savings of over 80 percent.
However, the crux is: The specific tools and strategies with which a part can be most efficiently finished depend heavily on the tool geometry, the material, the required surface quality and the machine kinematics. A circle-segment cutter is not always the first choice.
