Designing and manufacturing vacuum clamping devices

Practical example: CFRP wing shell (Part 1)

    Online webinar

    April 22, 2021 | 1:30 to 2:15 p.m.

It's a well-known task for anyone manufacturing CFRP parts: at the end of manufacturing, a clamping device is needed for trimming the part to the actual contour. The same also applies for thermoforming or for coated parts (interior)  The requirements for the devices are stringent: the part must hold securely and enable clean trimming; waste pieces shall not disturb the process.

Our practical example included an additional challenge: no further CAD data were available. Therefore, the wing had to first be scanned and the surfaces reverse-engineered.

This webinar shows how to design a vacuum clamping device in Ureol and to link it parametrically with the part data. We then explain how the device can be quickly and safely manufactured using suitable tools on a gantry milling machine and with the associated digital twins.

    Contents:
    • I don't have any CAD data for my part, now what?
    • My part has changed, now what do I do with the clamping device?
    • How can I automate machining of the clamping device?
    • Comparison of machining forces in Ureol/aluminum/steel
    • Tool selection strategies
    • Optimal machining parameters for Ureol
    • Technical synergy effects: Software, machine and tools
    • Expert session, collaboration and knowledge transfer
