Interviewee: Björn Katthage, Managing Director of R&R Formentechnik GmbH

The CAM process unit team has contributed significantly to optimally integrating the Tebis software in our processes. The path to digitalization was not always simple, but with clear vision, lots of perseverance and a strong partnership, we have taken our production to a whole new level.

Our conclusion: For us, digitalization goes far beyond simple paperless solutions. It opens up new opportunities to intelligently link processes and ensure our company is viable for the future. And especially: It also pays off for us economically.

    R&R Formentechnik GmbH

The company with headquarters in Halver, Germany, positions itself as a competent partner for machining highly complex components and products.

From tool steel to titanium, aluminum, copper and special alloys, R&R Formentechnik processes all the required materials in the automotive, aerospace and prototype and model manufacturing industries.

    The path to digitalization

Björn Katthage, Managing Director of R&R Formentechnik GmbH, describes the Tebis AG CAD/CAM solution as the key element in his manufacturing

Over the years, we have worked closely together with Tebis to develop a system that goes far beyond simple paperless solutions. It is the key to end-to-end digital processing and greater efficiency in our production. It was clear to us from the outset how important it was to position ourselves for the future. You have to be looking far ahead to survive as a company in this difficult market environment.

Björn Katthage explains: "With this background, we did not and still do not see our collaboration with Tebis as a quickly installed individual software solution. Instead, we were much more concerned with developing a scalable, future-proof infrastructure right from the start. The solution we developed together with Tebis is now the heart of our entire manufacturing system." Björn Katthage recalls the first steps: "We have been using Tebis since our company was founded in 2011. But at first, we only used a fraction of the potential of this CAM software. Of course it's not enough to simply purchase CAM software. The system is only as good as the knowledge anchored in it. The management basis and structure have to be designed specifically for this. In 2019, we decided to lay the foundation for our future automation with Tebis and established a technology concept for this, focusing on efficiency and future viability. The in-house team we then formed was highly motivated and digital-savvy across the board. We were eager to explore the potential of Tebis and to proactively further develop it to adapt the solution to our requirements. We see the path to automation as a common development process, and this perception is mutual: Throughout this process, we can contribute our vision, our innovative strength and our technical proposals and can work on an equal footing.

R&R Formentechnik has used Tebis, currently in version 4.1., since our founding. We have developed jointly as companies and furthered the concept of end-to-end processes over time.

    Our commitment: High-performance programming

The CAM process unit team, a group of experienced, hands-on CAM professionals, is available to provide technical consulting for Tebis corporate customers. They inspect the customer's machinery, go step by step through all the essential procedures together on site, and establish the basis for efficient processes and structured storage of knowledge and virtual twins, as they do for R&R Formentechnik. In this case, the project focused primarily on improving programming efficiency. Machining of standard geometries in particular frequently involved "face machining," and 2.5D machining was previously tedious and time-consuming.

This first necessitated revising the existing databases. Björn Katthage:

Of course we weren't starting from scratch; R&R Formentechnik already had an initial digital tool database and an MES-based process structure. What was missing was an overview, a systematic approach and specific goals. Working together with Tebis, we set about targeting the design of our tool databases.

The key question was: How many tools does R&R Formentechnik actually want to work with?

Tebis Process Solutions and the tool database

We worked together, scrapping pallets of old tools, classifying the remaining inventory and revising the databases for consistent records. All tools were digitally reproduced in Tebis, based entirely on articles and components. Standardization has advantages for procurement, simplifies programming and finally reduces the setup effort in manufacturing. Further classification of the tools, such as "eco"/"high-performance", ensures the cost-effective use of carbide tools. For example, cutters have up to 700 cutting parameters linked to strategy, material and machine. After standardization, expensive and sensitive tools are only used where appropriate, thus extending their service life.

The NC automation system based on the restructured tool management system can now automatically determine the required tools and select the appropriate strategy based on the geometry to be machined, the material and the selected machine. The large number of standard drilling operations typical for the company can now be completed in minutes.

The digitized tool management is scalable and each tool is fully traceable by its article number. Björn Katthage explains:

Of course we were not interested in order for its own sake. This project was driven by clear economic considerations. The current quality and clarity of our tool inventory are impressive. We manufacture at high quality and with essentially no rejects. In other words, our process is absolutely safe.

Digital consistency ensures efficient processes. R&R Formentechnik's workflow can be applied universally across all industries.

    Looking ahead

In the changeover to Tebis 4.1, R&R Formentechnik extended its use of Tebis templates to include clamping device management. Björn Katthage reveals that current collaboration with the Tebis process unit is going even further:

We are proud that Tebis has chosen us as its pilot customer for its new SmartOps technology.

SmartOps is Tebis's powerful technology for interactive, flexible and automated CAD/CAM processes. Based on the original template technology, this approach offers significant additional options for automated programming. Various aspects qualified R&R Formentechnik as an ideal pilot customer for SmartOps: In the previous collaborative effort, the company already contributed actively to further development with its base of structured data and its own software developments. SmartOps could be quickly integrated due to the existing MES process structure. Björn Katthage formulates it like this:

SmartOps can fully develop its potential given our current situation and our preparatory work.

With clear structures, complete traceability and smart synergy between follow-up orders and the support of the Tebis CAM process unit, R&R Formentechnik has optimized its processes and now benefits from a true competitive advantage.

    Björn Katthage:

The CAM process unit team has contributed significantly to optimally integrating the Tebis software in our processes. The path to digitalization was not always simple, but with clear vision, lots of perseverance and a strong partnership, we have taken our production to a whole new level.

Our conclusion: For us, digitalization goes far beyond simple paperless solutions. It opens up new opportunities to intelligently link processes and ensure our company is viable for the future. And especially: It also pays off for us economically.

Of course we are also proud to be seen as driving innovation and that we can now turn the equation around and actively support Tebis as a SmartOps pilot customer. Technology and process expertise come together.

Precise virtual twin as the foundation for safe manufacturing processes

The Tebis team has carefully digitized all machines and clamping devices at R& R Formentechnik. All machining tools were inspected, sorted and classified and are now also meticulously recorded.

The digital twins were stored one-to-one in the virtual production environment. This enables the detection and correction of possible collisions and limit switch problems before NC output.

This is indispensable, because collision-proof NC programs as well as integrated simulation and verification form the virtual foundation for safe machining
